CSS editor should remember position, size, and tab

So, Murray, what is the solution?
I have a background image in my left nav box and as I add a new link to the nav and it grows longer I'd like the image to just stretch with it. Is this not possible?
If not, is there some other trick?

Background images tile, not stretch. If you want it to stretch, you're out
of luck. Can you make one that will tile properly?
